Granite Tower Speakers

This is the first post of what may be a very long story.

My plan is to build a pair of Dynamic 4TSE entirely out of granite.  Before I get into the details, let me introduce these 3-way tower speakers designed by Jed Kunz of Clearwave Loudspeaker Design.

Each cabinet is comprised of the following drivers:
1 x Scan-Speak D2608/9130 HDS Tweeter – 1″
2 x Tangband W4-1337 Midrange – 4″
4 x Dayton RS180-8 Woofer – 7″

Specifications as reported by the designer:
Frequency Response:  42hz-20k +/- 2.5db
Sensitivity:  88db
Impedance: 8 ohm nominal
Dimensions: 8.5″W, 49″H, 17 3/4″D

Below are some pictures of the speakers built using the traditional material, MDF.

This is one of the towers completed by "Bill S", whose work has been appreciated in numerous DIY audio forums. Click on the image to see his build thread.

YES - there is also a matching center channel. That will come next, if I pull off the towers. Deewan's build thread can be found by clicking on this picture.

These were built by the creator himself. Click on the picture to view Jed's build thread.

You may notice that the mid-range driver placement is not the same in all pics.  The original design called for an offset of the tweeter AND the mids, however the latest design calls for an offset of the tweeter alone.

MDF itself is not a lightweight material.  With cabinets this size, they are going to be heavy regardless.  But granite is going to take the weight to a new level.  However, as I will explain in later posts, the weight going to be the least of my challenges.
