Fabric 1/2 complete

Made a good chunk of progress over the long weekend.  Applied the glue to the fabric, and applied the fabric to one most of one of the cabinets.  I still need to apply the fabric on the rear, and then over the other cabinet.

Applying the glue to the back of the fabric.  This turned out to be a great method – dry glue on both materials allow for mistake-free alignment, and the ironing worked like a charm to activate the adhesion.

I started by ironing the top first.

Then the sides.

Here it is after trimming the fabric flush with the front.

The back is getting a different treatment.  The fabric is laid down over the rabbeted edge and over the rear a half inch or so.

The piece on the back will go overlap here creating a little extra height.  This build up will fill the small gap under the steel, allowing it to be straight.  This was the closest I could get to matching the steel with the bits I had. The steel below was to help me clamp that fabric in place while the spray adhesive dried.  This will be a single frame when it is complete.

Here is an approximation of how it will look down the back.  Likely this will be painted or stained.

Am I blind? I’m not seeing here or on PE Forum what the material is. That interests me more than the project itself despite being highly impressed with the quality of the build.

It appears to be leather? Of much interest to me because I’ve considered that myself.

    Hi Jeff,

The fabric is a textured faux leather. I actually just wrote some detail on it over at the Clearwave forum. You can find that post here http://clearwave.forumotion.net/t149p30-baniels-4tse-build#1664.

Real leather would be very cool. I considered it briefly, but it would have been very expensive. Not to mention much more challenging, given the large size of area being covered. I’m not sure I could have fond such large pieces.

The stuff I’m using looks quite good and cost me around $60.
